Annie absentmindedly twirls her pencil in her fingers as she rests her head in her hand and stares out the classroom window. The overcast sky is blotting out the midday sun, giving the image of the city a gloomy feel. She sighs lightly, wondering how much longer class is going to take. She was thinking about heading out into the city again to explore during recess.

"Miss Fremont!"

The sound of her name gives her a jolt, sending her pencil clattering to the floor.

"Would you like to try and solve the equation for us?"

Mr. Moore was looking expectantly at her, accompanied by the slight smirk of a teacher who caught their student not paying attention to class. "Uh-umm," she stumbles for a moment, looking at the simple algebra written on the whiteboard.

"Is it 6?" she sheepishly guesses. Mr. Moore sighs. "No, Miss Fremont, it is not. It would do you good to pay more attention, since math is an important skill for many jobs here in the city. And good grades don't allow the privilege to slack off." He turns back to the board and begins writing the solution as giggles from Annie's classmates fill the room. Embarrassed, she picks up her pencil and takes another glance out the window before turning back to the lecture.
